Kenny Williams

ed Ken Griffey, Jr., a move that was part consummation of a long-time love affair with Junior by GM Kenny Williams and part best-choice trade.

Williams didn't give up much to get Griff, but it's hard to say where the aging outfielder fits in best. They've got him slotted in at center, where he's still adequate and no worse than Nick Swisher, but Junior's most valuable as a DH, and Jim Thome has been one of the few players to start cold and then get hot again. With both being lefties, it doesn't make sense to platoon them, either. And so there will be a rotation of sorts among Griff, Thome, Konerko and Swisher at first, DH and outfield.

Not a whole lot of description necessary for the Sox first week of 08. I'd say a sweep of the Tigers and a 5-2 record does a pretty nice job of speaking for itself. A record, I might add, that iIm pretty sure is identical to the 05 start. As is the lack of respect, which is fine; under the radar is the way to be.

Juan Uribe has been released…on waivers. It doesn’t necessarily mean he’s gone but I’d say it’s the Sox saying they are ready to give Alexei Ramirez the job. Apparently the waivering of Uribe could just be to “test his market value”. He just signed that $4.5 million dollar contract so if that can be lost I think they’ll go for it. I doubt that .250 hitting shortstops with 5 million dollar contracts are in that high of demand. I’m not 100% clear on how it all works, but if they don’t pull him back and nobody claims him, he’s just a free agent after that, but Kenny will have to pay his contract anyways. I wouldn’t go so far as to call that worst case scenario but paying something for nothing certainly isn’t the best thing that could happen. The Orioles are apparently without a serviceable shortstop and looking but I don’t know what they would want to give. They want pitching for Brian Roberts. That’s one thing we definitely don’t have extra of.

Also Kenny Williams has said he’s got no trade in mind so it looks like Crede is on his way to being our guy on opening day. And thank god. I rue the day ahead of time that we let Joe Crede slip away.
